Politics
Intent
We have chosen to study three highly relevant topics that will allow our students to become better citizens. To have formed and justified their own views whilst at the same time having developed the listening skills to allow others to express their own democratic opinions in a positive manner. Respect of all democratic views is our department’s mantra.
We wish our students to form a love and passion for the subject- to allow themselves to plunge deep into the subject with up to date articles, TV broadcasts, biographies and podcasts. Using social media platforms like Twitter responsibly to enhance their education and understanding.
We hope students develop an understanding of how the US and UK political system operate. Their similarities and their differences- how things are? Why things are? There is a major comparison part of the course between the UK/US political systems.
All of our lessons promote UK Values whilst investigating similar US ones. We are of course always vigilant of extremism in every shape and size and know what to look out for and how to report concerns if we spot them.
The Curriculum is without doubt knowledge rich but we endeavour to provide students with the skills necessary to question political extracts/speeches they come across, ask questions and not accept things at face value. These choices we have made are garnered towards encouraging our students to delve deeper into the world of mass media where they can find out more about each these fascinating topics including political ideas such as liberalism, Feminism and Environmentalism.
There are various cross curricular links that students are exposed to with heavy influence in both History, Sociology and English on these key topics. The beauty of studying Politics is that the skills the students are required to develop are incredibly flexible.
